If you’ve ever wondered about the real meaning behind dad-rock and are curious if it applies to you, you’ve come to the right place! The term does not denote a genre but rather a musical aesthetic, most often adopted by dads. Dad-rock describes any kind of music played by bands typically of caucasian descent, who represent the various dad moods. This can include very specific images such as the traditional dad who enjoys cars, beer, and women, the more modern dad who is more eccentric, or it may be more generic. Though the term “dad-rock” has been perceived negatively as signifying a type of music empty of innovation, it actually represents a type of music so successful in finding its sweet spot that it is content in its sameness. Much of dad rock’s popularity comes from its straightforwardness and embodiment of an uncompromisingly authentic ethos. This ethos has developed further into the dad-rock aesthetic, which can be seen from the body type and dress of people associated with this term. Dad-rock spans many decades and as such, the following list of songs will give you a glimpse into how dad-rock has aged.

EAGLES — TAKE IT EASY

One of the Eagles most popular hits, “Take It Easy” is a quintessential dad-rock tune about relaxing, love, and just living life. The Eagles formed in the early seventies in Los Angeles by four dads and had huge success throughout the decade. Though the band eventually broke up, their catchy and relatable hits had a lasting effect. With the Eagles, what you see is what you get: simple melodies with clear messages that never fail to brighten up your day. “Take It Easy” is the perfect tune to start off your dad-rock playlist.

BILLY JOEL — PIANO MAN

Just considering his appearance, it’s no surprise that Billy Joel made it onto this list. The bald father of three is an iconic musical figure whose songs never disappoint. The classic “Piano Man” was released almost 50 years ago and is still belted out in bars generations later. It’s the perfect example of a popular dad-rock song that received so much acclaim as a result of its simplicity and accessibility to wide audiences. There’s no doubt in my mind that “Piano Man” will live on in the minds and ears of people for years to come.

R.E.M. — IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT (AND I FEEL FINE)

R.E.M. is one of those bands that stands out because they don’t sound like anyone but themselves. The band was formed in 1980 in Athens, Georgia by then-college students, Peter Buck, Bill Berry, Michael Stipe and Mike Mills. Chaotic but catchy, “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It” is a quirky stream of consciousness that’ll have dads jamming out everywhere. Definitely add this one to your dad-rock playlist.

TOM PETTY — I WON’T BACK DOWN

Known for his long and floppy hair, Tom Petty speaks to cool dads everywhere. “I Won’t Back Down” is a classic example of the uncompromisingly authentic mood generally associated with dads. In this song Tom Petty demonstrates this feeling singing “Well I know what’s right / I got just one life / In a world that keeps on pushin’ me around / But I’ll stand my ground”. Straightforward in its message, “I Won’t Back Down” embodies the spirit of dads everywhere who refuse to be anything less than themselves.

SANTANA — SMOOTH (FEAT. ROB THOMAS)

Reserved for only the coolest dads around, “Smooth” is a fusion of rock and Latin American jazz, featuring an electric guitar solo and colorful horns. Contrary to the other songs on this list, “Smooth” is a sexy love song that might not evoke the image of a dad, but somehow it still manages to embody the carefree nature of dads unafraid to be themselves and has a very direct and unforgettable melody.
